Just when you thought you knew the finger settings for a recorder, turns out there are different versions depending on loud and soft you want to play, or even what make.  A brilliant wee niche resource.

As well as making their famous recorders, Dolmetsch also make a variety of other early instruments.  Loads of information and useful links.  The only thing they aren't set up for is buying online, but there is a downloadable order form.

Fèis Rois
An ever growing and developing organisation who has done much to increase the profile, performance of and access to traditional music in Ross & Cromarty.  Their popular festival weekends are a great opportunity to improve your playing skills or even learn a new instrument with an amazing range of tutors.

 

Ceolas
Ceòlas is a unique summer school, with the focus very much on Gaelic culture in all its mediums, from piping to dancing to the language itself, and all set in the beautiful surroundings of South Uist. 

 

Saint Chartier
What looks like an amazing festival in France where over 100 instrument makers are invited to show their work, as well as concerts showcasing more unusual music.  Some of the instruments on show include hurdy-gurdies, cornemuses and a whole variety of bagpipes.

Check out a particularly fun wee animated film from school children in Lewis on the Western Isles

 

FARNE Archive
Website dedicated to Northumbrian music.   Access 4,000 songs, tunes, sound recordings and photographs from across North East England- the sound recordings are particularly interesting

 

Chazzanut Online
Personal website on Jewish Liturgical Music (chazzanut), with a particular focus on Dutch music, together with a large collection of cantorial music scores, midi sound, annotated links and background information

 

Scottish Music Centre
Emphasis more towards contemporary Scottish classical music, but still plenty for the more folk and traditional inclined.    The Seriously Scottish Live Player lets you hear a wide range of tracks from Scottish artists which you can dip in and out of.  A great chance to hear music you might not otherwise give a try.

From the north east of England, and well worth a listen.  They even have a demo CD you can download to listen to- I'm still playing my copy!

 

Slainte Mhath
Canadian group that mixes fiddle, pipes, bozouki and dancing with traditional tunes and more than a touch of dance music that gets the room moving.

 

John Spillane
Irish singer songwriter with beautiful lyrics and tunes that really capture your ear.
